SAsb Third Graders Put Engineering Skills to the Test!
Our third-grade students took on an exciting STEM challenge, applying real-world engineering concepts to hands-on learning. As part of their lesson on structural design, students explored the fundamentals of foundations, infill, and structural support—key principles that help architects and engineers construct strong, stable buildings.
With their new knowledge in mind, students worked in teams to build index card towers capable of holding up a box of marbles. This activity encouraged them to think critically about weight distribution, balance, and reinforcement strategies. Through trial and error, they tested different designs, adjusted their structures, and discovered which building techniques worked best.
Not only did this challenge strengthen students’ understanding of STEM concepts, but it also fostered teamwork, problem-solving, and perseverance—all essential skills for future innovators. We are so proud of their creativity and determination!
Stay tuned for more exciting learning adventures in our SASB MakerSpace.
From Uncertainty to Excellence: Krysta Holman’s Journey at Career Academy
Krysta Holman, a junior at Career Academy High School, has come a long way since first joining the school in seventh grade during the COVID-19 pandemic. Initially feeling lost and disconnected, she found her footing through the Boys and Girls Club, which helped her improve her grades, make new friends, and get involved in extracurricular activities. Today, she is a standout student at CASB, participating in various clubs and competitions and earning a nomination as a Dean’s List finalist in FIRST Robotics, a prestigious honor recognizing leadership and dedication.
Krysta’s involvement in clubs like band, robotics, and an environmental competition has expanded her skill set and ignited her passion for storytelling, marketing, and connecting people. These experiences have shaped her career aspirations—she hopes to pursue a future in marketing, possibly in the agriculture or entertainment industries.
“My biggest mission in life now and into the future is I would like to tell people’s stories and have those stories be the bridge between people.”
Krysta credits her experiences at Career Academy with pushing her beyond her comfort zone and helping her discover talents she never knew she had.
“It’s really about getting out of your comfort zone, doing things that you never thought you would do. That’s where you find the skills you have and the ones you want to develop.”
With a strong communication, networking, and marketing foundation, Krysta envisions using her skills to connect people and make a positive impact. Whether in business, robotics, or storytelling, her journey is a testament to how involvement in extracurricular activities can shape both personal and professional growth.
Her story serves as an inspiration for fellow students—showing that stepping out of one’s comfort zone and seeking supportive communities can lead to incredible opportunities.
Krysta’s Advice to Fellow Students:
“No matter what you want to do, even if you’re unsure, just try. You never know what skills you’ll uncover.”
A New Chapter in Growth: Expanding Career Academy Network's Facilities
The Career Academy Network of Public Schools is embarking on an exciting new chapter of growth and expansion! This month, we officially begin renovation activities on the building located next to Career Academy at 3919 Crescent Circle, a space many in our school community know as “The Bend.”
This transformative project represents a major step forward in our commitment to providing high-quality educational opportunities for all students. As our network continues to grow, so does the demand for classroom space. With waitlists increasing, we recognize the need to expand our facilities to ensure every student has the opportunity to thrive in a dynamic and engaging learning environment.
The renovation will add 10 new classrooms, a makerspace, large flex spaces, a new classateria space, and auxiliary rooms designed to enhance both academic instruction and student collaboration. These improvements will create a more spacious and modern learning environment and support our goal of eliminating waitlists for students eager to join our Career Academy family.
We are thrilled to share that this revitalized space is expected to welcome students starting in the 2025-26 school year. As the transformation unfolds, we’ll share updates on progress, key milestones, and what students, families, and staff can look forward to in the new facility.
Stay tuned for more details throughout the semester as we build the future of Career Academy together!

Building a Literacy-Rich Future at SABGC
At Success Academy @ Boys & Girls Club (SABGC), we believe that literacy unlocks opportunities, and we are taking action to ensure every student has access to books and a love for reading. Our current literacy initiatives are making a significant impact in creating readers AND writers, but we need your help to take them even further!
Thanks to our amazing staff, students are making huge gains in their literacy proficiency in every grade. One of the effects of this increased literacy is a severe need to get books in the hands of our children. Students are improving in word recognition, begging for more reading time, and eager to select books that spark their curiosity.
Library card sign-ups have been happening at SABGC, with staff helping families enroll for free access to books, eBooks, educational programs, and homework resources. Our goal is 85% student enrollment, ensuring that every family has a passport to a world of learning!
Our students have been fully engaged in the Stu and Ivy South Bend Cubs Reading Challenge, and the results are inspiring! Students who complete their reading goals will earn exciting rewards, including a free South Bend Cubs game ticket! Besides reading minutes, students are competing in a bookmark contest, creating book recommendations, and generally becoming readers at heart.
Studios in Trimester Three
We were thrilled to launch another round of innovative Studio courses to kick off our third trimester. Studios bring our competency-driven approach to life through dynamic, hands-on experiences in an apprentice-based system. Our Studios are masterfully designed to engage students in solving real-world projects alongside community partners, ultimately creating products of enduring value in the world around us.
Propellers
In partnership with Tom from Limnetics, our applied math Propellers Studio course seeks to assist Limnetics with an important job—aerating small inland lakes with six to ten foot propellers. These propellers circulate water to help keep vulnerable fish populations safe and alive during the frigid winters of the upper Midwest. Our students will be hard at work figuring out how to experiment with different pitches, sizes, and speeds of these propellers for optimal efficiency. In order to do so, they will design and CAD out multiple prototypes to find the best ways to optimize this important work, putting their designs to the test here at school for later application in the wild.
Urban Agriculture, Part II
This trimester, many students opted to continue their studies in the Portage School Urban Agriculture Studio. Building on the skills learned last trimester, students took part in an exciting hands-on lesson in egg incubation. Eggs were sourced from a local farm and carefully incubated in the classroom for 21 days, resulting in a 50% hatch rate. Throughout this process, students explored the science behind egg formation, structure, and grading. They also learned how to candle eggs—a technique used to determine fertility and track embryo development. This task not only deepened their understanding of agricultural science but also provided a memorable, real-world learning experience. There are lots of exciting things in store for our Urban Ag students this trimester, including a partnership with the local Unity Garden that helps us utilize the bounty of our hydroponic garden.
