Overview

Families may qualify for support even if they are temporarily staying with others, living in a shelter, in a motel/hotel, or without a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence.

Key Rights & Supports

• Students may attend their school of origin or the school where they are temporarily residing.
• Students must receive a written statement of rights upon enrollment and at least twice per year.
• Students may enroll without school, medical, or similar records.
• Students have the right to transportation to school (as applicable).
• Families must receive an explanation if any service or enrollment is denied.
• Students receive services while disputes are being resolved.
• Students are automatically eligible for Title I services.
• Districts must reserve a portion of Title IA funds to serve students experiencing homelessness.
• Districts must review and revise policies that create barriers to enrollment and attendance.
• Schools must post information in the community about McKinney-Vento rights and services.
• Districts must identify a McKinney-Vento Liaison to assist students and families.
